As the nation collects itself in shock and sorrow, the world of football has joined in. All the upcoming Serie A games, as well as tonight's Red Star – Sassuolo Europa League game in Belgrade, will observe a minute of silence prior to the match.

Messages of solidarity have streamed in from every major club in Italy, as well as the Lega Serie A and Serie B.

Juventus' Agnelli Foundation donated €150,000 in assistance to the victims, whilst Max Allegri is auctioning a dinner with him in Turin and two tickets for his sky box at the Juventus Stadium, the profits of which will go into charity aid.

Lazio president Claudio Lotito played for Amatrice Calcio as a youngster. His mother was born in the small town and part of his family still lived there, although thankfully none of them were injured. He too communicated his availability to help.

All Italian sport joined in the mourning, including the likes of motorcycling star Valentino Rossi and Olympic diver Tania Cagnotto, whose celebration for her two medals has been deferred out of respect.
