Luciano Spalletti urged Roma to “move on” from their Champions League humiliation and focus on the next test with Cagliari.

It kicks off on Sunday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT), click here for a match preview.

This is the first game since the Giallorossi’s 3-0 home defeat to Porto, which saw Daniele De Rossi and Emerson Palmieri sent off, as they crashed out of the Champions League.

“Vasilis Torosidis is still out, Francesco Totti has a left ankle problem – the one operated a few years ago – and we need to evaluate Juan Jesus. Yesterday he got a nasty knock in training, was taken to hospital and is today training separately,” explained the Coach in his Press conference.

“In football it is important to win, but at times it is even more important to deal with defeat and move on to other objectives. This is a result we must learn from, but then we have to forget and go beyond to look at the many other objectives.

“It was an important defeat which taught us a great deal, but there are other objectives that are just as important coming up.

“You just need to be at training to realise my players are in constant movement. They stopped that night, but the next morning were already back on their feet looking forward. They deserve more chances, that’s for sure, because that game was also dominated by incidents and cannot be evaluated objectively as a performance.

“We have to cross this bridge and leave it behind us. The professional way my players have been working shows they are dealing with it.”

Roma have often crashed in big games and Spalletti also commented on their mentality in Europe, so how can this issue be resolved?

“Mentality is something that goes beyond victory or defeat. It is used via common sense, effort and the daily work you do to move towards an objective. Mentality doesn’t mean always winning, it means always trying to win.

“It’s a way of being together, of looking at objectives and improving day by day. In that sense, I am happy and proud of what my players have done thus far. Clearly we made some mistakes, starting from my own errors, but unfortunately they appeared during a crucial moment and therefore hit the headlines even more.

“Now certain people will relish this and try to build a whole film out of it. At times these people risk writing about themselves rather than the subject of their articles. They describe themselves instead.”

Which errors does Spalletti believe he made in the two-legged Champions League play-off with Porto?

“I never benefited from going back and thinking what I could’ve changed. I just say if this was the result, then evidently I made a mistake. If we lose, there is always an error. I spent hours considering my decisions with my staff, so there is regret, but what’s done is done.”

De Rossi saw red as captain against Porto, giving Maxi Pereira an injury that required ankle surgery.

“De Rossi is fine, he proved he’s in good shape, as we expected. He is the first to be disappointed and to blame himself for what happened. He showed us he is fully aware of what happened. When he cares so much about Roma’s results, it can put extra responsibility on his shoulders, more than is warranted, but we know what the player is and what he can give.”

Cagliari impressed at Genoa last week, despite eventually losing 3-1.

“Massimo Rastelli put together a strong team that can play in different ways. Last season they won the Serie B title with a diamond midfield, then against Genoa they played 3-5-2 and were leading up to the 78th minute.

“They have Mauricio Isla, Bruno Alves, strong and experienced players. It will be a difficult game, once we must win by playing better on the day.”

Spalletti was asked if there was the possibility of going with three at the back in Sardinia.

“When you have a squad with many talented players, you must take different possibilities into account. I don’t see the situation where we should throw everything out the window and we did work on three at the back in training, but there’s no suggestion we’ll do that tomorrow.”

Edin Dzeko and Kevin Strootman have been playing non-stop, so could they rest?

“I don’t think Dzeko has been doing badly so far this season. As for Kevin, it’s not about how many games he plays, but how he feels the next morning in training and monitoring his progress. He is ready to play again tomorrow.

“As for the goalkeeper, I know this is going to be an issue all season. Initially I chose Alisson because Wojciech Szczesny needed a few more days of training to be ready. I then picked him because I know him well, whereas we need to get to know Alisson better. They must get accustomed to being chosen game by game, which means giving their best day by day.”
