Vincenzo Montella is “satisfied” with Milan’s transfer campaign and revealed his system for motivating the players with bad reviews.

The Rossoneri are still in the middle of a takeover by Chinese investors and this effectively blocked their transfer activity this summer, leaving very few available funds.

“Do I believe in the Chinese group? Yes,” the Coach told Il Giornale.

“The adjective I’d use for the work we’ve done so far is satisfied. There’s a lot we can improve on, but there are the foundations to begin work too. Of course that takes time.

“I seek perfection that does not exist in football, so after the first two games I tell the team I am happy with the style of football expressed, but we have to do better. Above all the problem is in the goals we conceded. There’s also a lack of communication in our defence that we cannot blame on Gustavo Gomez, who only arrived 10 days ago.”

Is President Silvio Berlusconi also satisfied with this incarnation of the Rossoneri?

“The President is truly passionate about Milan and football, so transmits his confidence and encouragement in all circumstances. I spoke to him on the phone more than once and recently in the locker room ahead of the Napoli game.”

Montella revealed a cunning plan to spur on the Milan players after articles criticising the lack of quality in this squad.

“I found those to be unfair and decided to print out all those four and five out of 10 reviews to pin them up around the walls of Milanello. I am convinced the Milan players are worth a lot more than even they themselves believe.”

There’s no doubting the summer was one of disappointment, as Adriano Galliani tried and failed to woo Marko Pjaca, Mateo Musacchio and Juan Cuadrado.

“I already experienced the season of transition from one owner to another at Roma, so I know full well the torment and difficulty,” continued Montella.

“For Galliani, who is at his 30th summer here, it was very complicated. At the end of the day we got a little gift anyway.”

Mati Fernandez arrived from Fiorentina on deadline day, having previously been on the verge of signing for Cagliari.

“I want to make it very clear that I have a rapport with Mati that is not just professional, but also personal. It’s also very probable that he called me repeatedly rather than the other way round. At the end he convinced me with his enthusiasm and the moment this option opened up he signed. I want Cagliari to know we did not obstruct their operation in any way.

“He is a midfielder, dynamic in tight spaces, good with ball to feet.”

Will Montella adjust the tactical system going forward?

“I am not a Taleban of tactics. I believe more in players than systems and usually avoid too many changes, otherwise it creates confusion within the group.

“Carlos Bacca’s career speaks for itself. Suso did not give his best and needs to take more risks. I am struck by Gianluigi Donnarumma and how calmly a 17-year-old is experiencing the role of goalkeeper for Milan and Italy.”

Finally, Montella was asked if he was ever close to taking the Italy job before it was handed to Giampiero Ventura?

“I always thought that the Nazionale required someone of great experience, so Ventura is the right man.”
