Gigi Buffon welcomed Leonardo Bonucci back to the Italy squad and called Giampiero Ventura “the right man at the right time.”
The opening 2018 World Cup qualifier against Israel kicks off in Haifa on Monday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).
Buffon’s Juventus teammate Bonucci was not expected to take part, but arrived after news his infant son is on the road to recovery.
“We don’t want to get too much into private matters, but we are happy that things are going in the right direction,” said the captain in a Press conference.
“Leo arrived yesterday with his usual determination, passion and enthusiasm, bringing the right ingredients to face what I consider to be a very important game.
“Historically we struggle in friendlies and are not particularly impressive, but in the games that count – like tomorrow – we must find the right performance in the way we know how.”
Buffon has been in the Italy squad since 1995, so how is he settling in with Ventura?
“Without making comparisons, I think he is the right man at the right time. I don’t need to introduce our CT, as his story speaks for himself and above all the imprint you could see on his teams from miles away.
“That means he does meticulous daily work on the training ground and it’s not made up as he goes along. I admire Coaches who explain their ideas and have very specific plans.”
