Gattuso’s role as Pisa Coach rules him out of a quick return to Milan, but he is backing his former teammates to restore the “organisational” order that has been missing at the club “in recent years”.

“It’s been a few years of hardship,” the former midfielder told Sky Sport Italia.

“I hope that those [guys] can come into the club. Maldini, Costacurta and Albertini, these are the names who can bring something new because it’s needed.

“They need a bit of money in the kitty in order to build a competitive team, but at the same time they need a perfect machine [operating] at organisational level, like when I played.

“Something at that level has been missing in recent years.”
