The Delfini had taken the lead through Jean-Christophe Bahebeck, but an Icardi brace turned it around in stoppages.

“Inter have Mauro Icardi and we don’t,” Oddo told Sky Sport Italia after the 2-1 home defeat.

“Inter caused us problems, but then that’s what they are supposed to do. Little Pescara created five or six clear-cut chances and certainly did not deserve to lose this match.

“This team tries to play open and attacking football against anyone. We struggled at the start, but then got more organised and were able to close them down early.

“I think Inter are one of the strongest squads in Serie A and both teams played very well this evening.

“Sides need to have balance and in the first half we mainly defended, as Inter were passing the ball well and pinned us back. We know how to defend too, but the idea generally is to attack and be positive.

“Tonight we did in moments, just as we defended in moments too. I have this approach because I know my players have quality, otherwise I’d be crazy to do that. If I had counter-attacking players, I’d sit back and hit teams on the break, but I think we can do better.”

Valerio Verre hit the bar and forced another difficult save out of Samir Handanovic, so why was he substituted?

“Because a couple of minutes earlier he told me that he couldn’t hold on any more. I think he gave every last drop of energy in that run. I introduced Bahebeck to attack the spaces and I think he did it well.”
