FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio admits Aleksander Ceferin’s rise to UEFA power happened “in a way that not even we expected”.

Ceferin was the unanimous choice to succeed Michel Platini on Wednesday, and while Tavecchio made it clear the former Slovenian FA chief quickly became Italy’s man, he remained surprised by how quickly the 47-year-old won so many federations over.

“The forecast we made at the time was substantiated, in a way that not even we expected ourselves,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

Ceferin was the unanimous choice to succeed Michel Platini on Wednesday, and while Tavecchio made it clear the former Slovenian FA chief quickly became Italy’s man, he remained surprised by how quickly the 47-year-old won so many federations over.

“The forecast we made at the time was substantiated, in a way that not even we expected ourselves,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We immediately identified that Ceferin was the right person, even though he wasn’t well known to most people at the time.

“It’s a beautiful achievement. and certainly his first official visit [as UEFA President] will be in our country.”

On the appointment of female executive Evelina Christillin to the FIFA council, Tavecchio added: “We said that a woman had to enter the confines of FIFA and it happened via this great result.

“Greater weight to Italy? At present, Italy has representatives at the highest world levels.”
