Paolo Di Canio is ready to sue Sky Sport Italia for their “hypocrisy” in firing him for showing off a Fascist tattoo referencing Benito Mussolini.

The former West Ham United man was working as a presenter on their Premier League show this season.

He was ‘suspended’ after outrage on social media, as Sky tweeted a picture of him wearing a short-sleeved shirt, which showed off the tattoo ‘DUX’ – referencing Il Duce Mussolini – on his arm.

“I cannot remain in silence, as the company needs to clear along with me the very simple situation of an unfortunate inconvenience so I can resume my work,” Di Canio told Il Secolo XIX newspaper.

“My lawyer made a legal request and we’ve been told that, at least for now, my return to Sky is unthinkable. What makes me more indignant is the hypocrisy of those who still pretend to only now discover what I am like and some of my ideas. They’ve been well known for ever.”

Indeed Di Canio once received a Serie A ban for making a Fascist salute to Lazio fans after a Rome Derby.

“It was simply a banal error from those who published that photo for Sky, (taken behind the scenes before the live broadcast began) without noticing my bicep and the tattoo were visible.

“This was nothing more than someone being distracted and not noticing, but it certainly cannot be blamed on me and above all can’t be used as reason to remove me from my job.

“I want a public and conjoined clarification about this. It is the fairest and most transparent way of explaining what happened and overcome this ridiculous situation, putting myself in the condition to resume my work without further unfair dismissal.”
