Paulo Sousa feels he is “continuing the journey” at Fiorentina started by Cesare Prandelli and Vincenzo Montella as he hosts Milan.

This is a clash with Montella, who Sousa replaced on the Fiorentina bench last summer.

“We spoke many times about what he left in Florence and a comparison like that needs to evaluate everything, from players to moments to when how many years they’ve been working together,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“From the first season with Montella he created an idea based on technically-minded players that can be positive. This idea was also there with Prandelli and I am the right man to continue that journey.

“Milan might not be able to fight for the Scudetto, but they are in the running for the top places. They have a strong club, quality players and a great Coach who always tries to control the game.

“We must try to be more efficient, as only results bring greater self-belief,” continued Sousa.

“This team must learn to know its limitations and surpass them. Compared to last season, our fitness training has been different and that means I had to make different decisions and strategies. We have a group that alternates high pressing with low, while last year it was just high.

“We are too static on the pitch and need to be more mobile to create the spaces. I have seen a strong team spirit and that can help us achieve victory even when we’re not playing at our best.

“Last season we were on paper a mid-table squad and tried to amaze everyone. This time we must try it again, especially as Serie A in general has improved thanks to the arrival of some top level players. This is why we must continue to improve.

“Carlos Sanchez is bringing extra physicality, presence and an aerial threat to the team. I think he fits very well into Serie A.”
