Bad news for Cagliari, as trequartista Joao Pedro is set for a lengthy lay-off after fracturing his fibula.

The incident occurred during today’s training session as the team prepared for Sunday’s match with Crotone.

“It was a simple collision during exercises on set plays and he fell awkwardly,” explained Coach Massimo Rastelli.

“It’s a terrible blow for us, as he is a player who is simply irreplaceable.”

There are reports Joao Pedro will be out of action for anything between one and four months, depending on the severity of the break.

Cagliari had already lost Artur Ionita to a fractured fibula earlier this season.

“In 25 years of my career, I’d never seen so many serious injuries in quick succession,” added Rastelli.

“We also lost Daniele Dessena and Federico Melchiorri for a lengthy period, now Marco Storari too.

“We can try using Barella behind the strikers, but there really aren’t many alternatives. After the break for international duty we’ll try to get Diego Farias back.”

Cagliari squad for Crotone: Colombo, Crosta, Rafael; Bittante, Bruno Alves, Ceppitelli, Isla, Murru, Pisacane, Salamon; Barella, Dessena, Di Gennaro, Munari, Padoin, Tachtsidis; Borriello, Giannetti, Melchiorri, Sau
