Paolo Maldini has reportedly rejected the chance to return to Milan under the club’s new Chinese owners.

According to Calciomercato, Maldini’s rebuttal only “lacks official confirmation” after a series of meetings between the Rossoneri legend, general manager Marco Fassone and Han Li, a Sino-Europe Sports intermediary.

Maldini would have worked alongside incoming sporting director, former Inter chief scout Massimo Mirabelli, but the retired defender is said to have demanded “much more decision-making power, a la Leonardo at Paris Saint-Germain”.

Such requests, which also included speaking to representatives other than Li, were considered “inadmissible” by Fassone, while the Chinese were “irritated” by Maldini’s decision to notify the Italian Press of his doubts.
