“In 18 months, I might think back on it and laugh…” Buffon told reporters in the mixed zone.

“If it happens again in two or 20 days, I’ll laugh less. The trouble was I had too many ideas in my mind on how to kick the ball. I was afraid of kicking it straight at Vitolo, so I thought of passing it to a defender and in the middle I opened my foot too much for that complete mess.

“We managed to get the game back on track and my teammates were incredible, because after the goal we found a physical and psychological vehemence to get on level terms.

“It might’ve seemed impossible to manage that considering how the first hour went. This match will serve as a lesson and valuable experience, because we were too timid in the first hour.

“Yet after going behind, we proved that we could control the match and cause Spain huge problems. We must build from that fightback towards the World Cup.”
