Milan are likely to receive FIFA compensation after Riccardo Montolivo was injured on Italy duty.

It was confirmed earlier today that the midfielder has ruptured his cruciate ligament, an injury which would ordinarily require at least six months on the sidelines.

Under FIFA’s Club Protection rule, the governing body will pay the wages of any player who suffers an injury on international duty which “entirely prevents the football player from playing for his club for more than 28 consecutive days”.

The ruling means that if, as seems almost certain, Montolivo spends more than 28 days on the sidelines, after that period FIFA will pay his wages, with the rule providing for compensation up to a maximum of €7.5m.

The compensation “is payable for a maximum of 365 days” and “is based solely on the fixed salary that the football club pays directly to the football player as his employer”.
