Inter President Erick Thohir and board member Steven Zhang confirmed their intention to renovate San Siro.

The project has been talked about since Chinese giants Suning Commerce Group bought out the majority shares of the club.

“A new San Siro is vitally important to Inter,” Thohir told the official club website.

“I’ve been President of this club for almost three years and have always firmly believed that renovating San Siro – our home – is a crucial step that Inter must take if we’re to become one of the world’s top 10 clubs.

“Our interest in San Siro now has the strong, determined backing of Suning too and this was explained to the mayor, Giuseppe Sala, at the meeting held while chairman Zhang and his son Steven were last in Milan.

“Inter want to remain at San Siro and invest significantly in it. We’re happy that we’re on exactly the same wavelength as the mayor, in that we both see the new San Siro as a hugely important project for Milan and Milanese football.”

Inter board member Steven Zhang, the son of the chairman, also explained their plans for San Siro “will help boost an important area of the city by offering facilities and entertainment 365 days a year.

“It will also turn the stadium into an even bigger attraction and make the matchday experience even more engaging for fans of all ages.

“We want San Siro to become the stadium of Inter fans’ dreams – even more so than it is already. Having a modern facility is crucial for the club in terms of increasing revenue and therefore improving results on the pitch.

“Inter is a long-term investment for us, one we have great belief in, and San Siro is one of the cornerstones of our plans to get Inter back up among the best in the world.”

Milan also share the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and abandoned plans last year to build their own arena.

When the Rossoneri have completed their take-over by a Chinese conglomerate, they will also be expected to join in the renovation project.
