It had been rumoured Sarri would use Jose Callejon as a False 9, flanked by both Lorenzo Insigne and Mertens.

However, Sky Sport Italia today claim that Napoli tested Belgium international Mertens in the centre-forward role.

The diminutive 29-year-old certainly has a good scoring record, netting four with three assists in just eight competitive appearances this season.

It would be a new and intriguing role for Mertens, confirming Sarri’s 4-3-3 system with a very different strategy – fewer crosses, more rapid passing.
