It was their third consecutive Serie A defeat, the sixth of his 12 competitive games.

“We know that it is always very difficult to play in Bergamo. Above all in the first half we just didn’t play, it was only Atalanta,” the Coach confessed on Mediaset Premium.

“In the second half we did much better, especially after the equaliser. It is always difficult when a big club like Inter has three consecutive defeats, but in my view we can improve, as we saw in the second half.

“On their second goal we were not concentrated and lost the game, it was incredible. I am disappointed for the first half, as we played with fear and I don’t know why. I told my players that at half-time and the game changed.”

Mauro Icardi did have the ball in the net, but the whistle had already been blown for his push on the goalkeeper.

“It was not a good decision, as it was not a foul from Icardi. It is the defender that pushed Mauro. Things just aren’t going our way at the moment.

“After the win over Juventus we played some good phases of games, such as for 70 minutes against Cagliari. People forget these quickly when the end result is not positive.

“We have made steps forward, but when the results are not good, it’s always going to be tough. A victory here would’ve been important for Inter and our confidence.

“I’ve seen positive things in many games, but today in the first half it simply was not our Inter. We dominated after the break and created chances, so that is the Inter I want to see always.”

De Boer will undoubtedly be under fire for his choices, leaving out Antonio Candreva, Ever Banega and Gabriel Barbosa.

“We have many great players and only 11 can start. It is not a good situation for the players or the staff, but we have to accept it. I choose the best 11 to win the game.”

De Boer also spoke to Sky Sport Italia and was asked point-blank if he thinks he'll be on the Inter bench on Wednesday.

"I don't know."
