Stephan El Shaarawy says he is hoping his good form for Roma will earn him a starring role in Giampiero Ventura’s Italy squad.

El Shaarawy made it three goals in two appearances in Roma’s 4-1 victory over Palermo on Sunday, and the former Milan attacker admits he has one eye on a return to the times that saw him among Italy’s best players at the 2013 Confederations Cup.

“My goal celebration? It was a celebration that we decided to do together before the Europa League game. It’s been a good omen,” he told reporters.

“My goal celebration? It was a celebration that we decided to do together before the Europa League game. It’s been a good omen,” he told reporters.

“We gave a good answer because we wanted to give continuity [to our winning run].

“We were good on the ball. We’re happy beyond the goals we scored, even for our defence.

“My goal? When I stopped, I stretched my leg out a bit. The only thing we could do was win.

“My celebration was one of relief because I wanted the goal.

“Competition? I think it’s normal in a great team, but I’ve never been worried about it.

“The Coach has respect and faith in me, so I hope to do the same in our upcoming games.

“Ventura? Certainly it’s something I think about, I’ve always been part of the national team. My objective is to return via Roma.”
