The likes of Laurent Blanc and Marcelo Bielsa had been put forward as possible appointments in the event Inter dispensed with De Boer after a recent run of defeats, but Ausilio was quick to join his fellow board members in backing the Dutchman.

“No Coach was contacted. I challenge anyone to say otherwise,” the sporting directo said at a shareholders’ meeting on Friday.

“Many names have been suggested, but Inter’s Coach is Frank de Boer.

“We made a choice at the end of August, we support him and believe that his football project will be successful.”

Club director Nicola Volpi – speaking in the absence of Erick Thohir, who was tending to his poorly father – however appeared to remind De Boer of the Nerazzurri’s need for results.

“The team’s results so far haven’t been satisfactory, apart from on a few occasions, but we got three important points on Wednesday, from which we hope to reboot [our season],” he added.

“The most important thing is to stay together, the shareholders, Coach, club and the team, and try to offer our maximum support, so we can face every challenge with courage, sincerity, fighting spirit and determination to honour the Nerazzurri.

“For better or worse, we’re here to take responsibility and continue to take all necessary decisions for the good of Inter.

“Despite the difficulties we’ve had on the pitch, the objectives that we set earlier in the season are and should stay the same.

“Given our history and tradition, the club deserve to compete in the most important competitions. [The club] deserve to return to the Champions League.

“This is still our goal and the fact that we’ve lost the points along the way doesn’t change it.

“We must work even harder to get back on track and regain lost ground. We can only do it if we all work together.”
