Pirelli CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera has leapt to Frank de Boer’s defence, instead slamming Inter’s owners for not being “near” the club.

De Boer is said to be under extreme pressure after Inter suffered their fifth Serie A defeat in 11 matches on Sunday against Sampdoria, but the Nerazzurri’s chief sponsor insists the club’s problems stem from the remoteness of Suning Group and Erick Thohir.

“Even an extraordinary Coach without his club behind him will fail to achieve great things,” Provera told Gr Parlamento.

“A football club can’t be run from Jakarta, Beijing or Nanjing. Inter won 15 trophies in six years due to the fact that the owners were present.

“Generally in football, the only winning formula is passionate ownership that’s near the team: just like Berlusconi and Milan, Agnelli and Juventus.

“De Boer? There was [already] too many mistakes. The possible return of former President [Moratti]? The problem had to have been solved a long time ago, today we would be speaking differently about Inter.

“I doubt Mancini would return, it’s difficult. Simeone is a great Coach, Inter have a soul and are a name that creates emotion.

“Icardi Inter’s ‘bandiera’? He can be if the club stand by him, he’s a great player. He plays with passion. It’ll be up to the club to make him truly great.”
