It had become a three-horse race between Zola, Marcelino and Pioli.

While the ex-Lazio man was falling by the wayside following Friday’s meeting with the Suning Group representatives in Milan, there was a sudden change.

It seems unofficial Suning consultant Kia Joorabchian agreed with directors Piero Ausilio and Giovanni Gardini that the replacement should be an Italian with experience of Serie A.

Zola seemed to fit the bill, as he also has an international profile, but it appears the original plan of Pioli has convinced the Chinese owners.

A statement from Suning is expected this afternoon, not just about the Coach, but also noting the ‘resignation’ of CEO Michael Bolingbroke.

It’s widely believed this is a dismissal, as he was the one behind the appointment of De Boer.
