Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Sportiello ‘almost joined Napoli’ last summer, reports say.

According to Il Mattino, the 24-year-old was ready to join the club in order to learn from veteran stopper Pepe Reina with a view to securing the number one spot. Atalanta slammed such reports as 'false' at the time, but details have since emerged that suggest otherwise.

Despite the willingness of Sportiello to join the Partenopei, the fact that backup goalkeepers Luigi Sepe and Rafael Cabral remained at the club meant that his arrival was ultimately thwarted.
