Italy captain Gigi Buffon warned the trip to Liechtenstein “is the most complicated for a goalkeeper, because you risk embarrassment.”

The World Cup qualifier kicks off in Vaduz on Saturday at 19.45 GMT.

“This time of match is actually the most complicated for a goalkeeper,” said Buffon in his Press conference.

“On paper we are favourites, but if you don’t have the humility to prepare well for this game and the right determination on the pitch, you risk embarrassing yourself in the few sporadic occasions when you are called into action.

“I cannot allow that I, and in general the team, is embarrassed tomorrow. Don’t forget against the Faroe Islands we won twice with some really big scares. Hopefully tomorrow we’ll play well and keep a clean sheet.”

Buffon is fast closing on a career total 1,000 competitive games. How does that feel?

“It’s pleasing, there’s a lot of them and it is a sign of both good luck and a certain professionalism. If you don’t have that, you won’t get to play 1,000 games.”
