Fabio Capello feels Gigi Buffon “deserved the Ballon d’Or” in his career and is impressed by Milan’s teenage midfielder Manuel Locatelli.

This will be the 167th cap for goalkeeper Buffon, who said he’ll retire at the age of 40 after the 2018 World Cup.

“I think Gigi deserved the Ballon d’Or during his career,” Capello told German paper Tz.

“He’s not the only one, as I’d have also given the award to Dino Zoff, Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini.”

There is a new generation coming through in Serie A and Capello is particularly impressed with an 18-year-old Milan midfielder.

“The one who really caught my attention was without doubt Locatelli. He was born in 1998 and I would love to see him become a protagonist with the Azzurri shirt too.”
