Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic admits “one day I hope to go back” to Udinese after reflecting on his time with the Zebrette.

Handanovic left Udinese for Inter in 2012, the same summer the Friuliani lost their Champions League playoff against Arsenal, and the Slovenian confessed his “regret” at not only the side losing the tie but also their failure to properly reinvest the money received from Barcelona for Alexis Sanchez.

“My best memory is the third place we achieved in 2011-2012,” he told TuttoUdinese.

“We went back to Udine and the fans were delighted. They waited for us at the airport and I didn’t think such a thing could happen.

“Our biggest regret, however, was the playoff against Arsenal. Unfortunately we didn’t train as best we could.

“In addition to missing Basta and Domizzi, we didn’t strengthen as we should’ve that summer after the sale of [Alexis] Sanchez.

“I’m convinced that we could’ve done something important. We were a great group and a proper team, we could’ve achieved a lot.

“Relationship with the Udinese fans? My character is very similar to those from Udine and Friuli.

“That’s why we enjoyed being together. I always love going back to Udine, both when I play and when I sometimes return to Slovenia as I stop to greet friends I have there.

“One day I hope to go back there.”
