“I think we could’ve qualified without the injuries, if only we’d had all the players at our disposal, but nonetheless the most experienced European sides went through. We paid for a lack of experience.”
Genk and Athletic Bilbao are both qualified and tied together on nine points, so Sassuolo’s opponents still have something to play for.
“The regrets are above all wrapped up in our draw with Rapid Vienna. It’s strange, because beforehand people said it’d be a success if Sassuolo got through the preliminary rounds, now this exit in the group stage is being treated like a defeat.
“We must honour the final match as best we can, even if I haven’t many choices yet again. It was a nice experience for us, but in football it takes time to become great and we’ve proved we are not yet ready to handle two tournaments.
“I don’t want to see the wrong approach tomorrow and talked to the lads about the right mentality. We wanted to be in Europe and it’s only right we honour it to the end.
“I hope that Sassuolo will qualify for Europe again, hopefully with more experience under our belts.”
