Vincenzo Montella has confirmed that duo Carlos Bacca and Giacomo Bonaventura will miss Monday’s trip to Roma.

The Rossoneri are third in Serie A and lie level on points with Monday’s opponents, while they are four behind League leaders Juventus.

However, they will have to make do without forward Bacca or attacking midfielder Bonaventura, with Montella admitting he did not want to risk rushing either of them back from recent injury lay-offs.

“This week has been longer than usual but we had a break half way through, at the right time,” Montella said at a Press conference.

“The team recognises that the match is extremely important, there is no risk of underestimating it. We have prepared for the match in the last three days.

“Roma at home have beaten everyone, they have great worth and they have been built to fight for the Scudetto, with an excellent Coach.

“I am sorry for Jack and for Bacca, we decided together to not risk them. They are fine, but it would have been a stretch to include them.”

Montella then answered questions on Andrea Bertolacci and Keisuke Honda.

“Bertolacci is developing, he is in shape to be able to express himself on the pitch. He has been training with us for a long time, but he was also out for a long time.

“He has the right characterisitics to be at Milan.

“Honda? He is a great professional, always balanced. Against Crotone he did very well, against Genoa he made a mistake.”

Finally, the San Siro Coach would not be drawn on whether victory at Roma could be the start of a title challenge.

“If we win, will we think about the Scudetto? We don’t mix reality with fantasy too much, it’s better that the media and fans do that. We are concentrated on the present.”
