Inter director Piero Ausilio confirms they will whittle down the squad in January, but a decision is yet to be made on Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa.

The Nerazzurri host Lazio at 19.45 GMT, follow the action as it happens on the Liveblog.

“We want to and indeed can reignite our hopes for third place. Recent performances have been positive and gave us belief for the rest of the season,” Ausilio told Mediaset Premium.

“We have already agreed with the Coach what to do for the transfer window. Above all we must reduce the squad to give the Coach an opportunity to make the most of a more homogenous group, seeing as for four or five months we’ll only be playing in Serie A and the Coppa Italia.”

Among those who could be heading out the door in January is Gabigol, who made just two appearances for a total 19 minutes of football since arriving from Santos for €29.5m.

“It’s too early to comment on Gabigol. We believe this lad can do well at Inter, so will make any decision along with him and his family. Over the last month he has made important steps forward, we believe he can grow with us and that is the idea. Then we’ll see.

“Some will leave in January, perhaps one will arrive. We know what we want to do, but obviously it depends on other clubs too. We want to work hard and the club is well-structured.”

Stefano Pioli has adjusted the line-up to 4-2-3-1 this evening, having used three at the back in recent games.

“The current squad has many options, we could go to 4-3-1-2 as well, but the current system allows us to make the most of Ivan Perisic and Antonio Candreva’s qualities. I don’t think Mauro Icardi is isolated in attack at all,” continued Ausilio.

“I’d also like to point out that every Coach who has come to Inter commented that Icardi was different from the player they expected. Only those who know him realise he’s an exemplary professional. He made a few mistakes in his youth, but has moved beyond them.”
