Max Allegri explains how he came up with his new-look Juventus against Lazio. “Nobody expected me to actually do it!”

Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain were on target in the 2-0 victory, which was sealed with a 4-2-3-1 formation including Juan Cuadrado, Mario Mandzukic and Miralem Pjanic.

“Paradoxically with so many attacking players, we allowed little or nothing to Lazio,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“During the week I hadn’t even thought about it, but after a training session the next morning I thought, I have to change something.

“I had said yesterday in the Press conference that it was an option, but nobody expected me to actually do it!

“Mandzukic has gone back in time, because he played in that role when he was much younger. He also has a never-ending engine and isn’t even tired at the final whistle. He did very well today defending and in terms of technique.

“I don’t have to make anyone happy. I am not much of a theorist, but every now and then I come up with a mad idea and try it on the pitch. The important thing is to be sure what you’re doing.”

Can this system become the permanent approach for Juventus going forward?

“It’s one of the options, certainly. Everyone was involved and played a great game as a team. This side has the technical quality to challenge anyone and we need to use all of that to succeed in Europe.

“Today we made a few mistakes and could’ve had many more goals.”
