According to L’Equipe newspaper, Marseille made an attempt to sign the Italy international over the weekend.

However, as they wanted him on loan with option to buy, President Aurelio De Laurentiis slammed the door on negotiations.

Instead, talks are continuing with Southampton for a permanent transfer.

It’s reported the final offer on the table is €16-€17m plus bonuses and possibly also a percentage of any future transfer fee.

De Laurentiis is holding up the entire affair, as he is determined to get as close to €20m as possible.

The patron is also said to believe that Gabbiadini will make a big splash in the Premier League, so would love to include a buy-back clause in the deal.

Napoli paid just €13m to sign him from Sampdoria two years ago.
