A decision over Roma’s new stadium has been delayed by 30 days, with the aim of reducing the size of the project.

It was reported earlier today that the Stadio della Roma project was facing the axe, as Rome’s mayor, Virginia Raggi, was expected to reject the proposal.

Representatives of her anti-establishment Movimento 5 Stelle party had been against the proposal, and recently claimed it was an example of real estate speculation.

The location of the stadium is sparsely populated, and M5S claimed there was no point in investing so much and providing so much infrastructure for such a location.

After fears the proposals would be rejected altogether, a 30-day delay of the Conferenza dei Servizi has been delayed.

It’s thought that this is to allow time to reduce the scope of the project, in order to assuage the concerns raised by M5S.

Had the proposal proceeded as it is and been rejected, the Giallorossi would have to start the process all over again.

The Stadio della Roma has been hit by a series of delays, with a proposed design announced in 2014.

Roma had hoped to finally break ground this year
