The Serie B minnows had dominated much of the game at the Stadio Olimpico, rattling the woodwork and forcing several tough saves from Alisson.

They cancelled out an Edin Dzeko opener with Luca Garritano making the most of defensive chaos, but five minutes into stoppages Roma were awarded a debatable penalty.

It seemed as if Kevin Strootman had run into the goalkeeper rather than the other way round, and he had already released the ball.

“It’s a penalty that only the referee saw,” Camplone told Rai Sport. “But he did give it and we have to accept that.

“We put in a strong performance and I think we caused huge problems for a great side like Roma. I am happy with the way we played and compliment my lads, hoping this can give us a boost to believe in ourselves in the league too.”

Francesco Totti wrote on Twitter that Cesena “do not belong in Serie B” and the message was passed on to Camplone.

“That’s a great compliment from the captain. I am happy with the way my team played, as we gave our all. If we bring that same spirit into the Serie B matches, we can avoid relegation.”
