Sampdoria dominated the first half, but had to scrape a 1-1 draw with Torino thanks to a penalty apiece.
Both sides were promoted from Serie B in the summer, but the Blucerchiati had a considerably better start to this season with three consecutive victories. Toro threw Alessio Cerci in for his first start with Giampiero Ventura’s favoured 4-2-4 system, but Andrea Poli and Juan Antonio were injured for the home side.
Samp started the game stronger and had a great chance on 19 minutes. Maxi Lopez dispossessed a dawdling Kamil Glik and sprinted into the box, but fired straight at a grateful Jean-Francois Gillet.
Toro started to gain more possession, aided by Blucerchiati errors, but Riccardo Meggiorini was booked for a cynical shoulder-charge on Marcelo Estigarribia that made no attempt to play the ball.
Enzo Maresca took the resulting free kick from the edge of the box that curled on to the crossbar, then Maxi Lopez redirected Berardi’s shot into the net, but the Argentine was correctly flagged offside.
Another defensive error, this time from Matteo Darmian, allowed Estigarribia to burst into the penalty area only to see his shot into the ground smothered at the base of the near post by Sergio Romero.
Sampdoria had such a clear scoring opportunity on the stroke of half-time, as Maresca’s cross found a Daniele Gastaldello volley that Romero flew to palm out from under the bar.
After the restart Darmian’s shot took a deflection off Maresca, but Romero scrambled across to block at the near post.
Torino had barely threatened at Marassi, but were awarded a penalty when Cerci skipped past Andrea Costa and was clumsily brought down by Roberto Soriano. The spot-kick was inevitable and Rolando Bianchi set aside memories of his miss against Pescara, blasting it under the bar.
The referee pointed to the spot again, this time for the home side after Glik mistimed his challenge on Eder when running on to a Maxi Lopez through ball. There were no doubts and Nicola Pozzi’s slow daisy-cutter penalty rolled under Gillet’s body to equalise.
Sampdoria nearly won it in stoppages, but Gillet came to the rescue after an Angelo Ogbonna error. A Soriano cross-shot also skimmed the bar, then in the final seconds Gillet flew to palm a splendid Eder curler out of the top corner.
