Catania fought back after a goalkeeping howler to earn this victory, but Atalanta had a golden opportunity to snatch a point in stoppages.
The Elefantini were full of confidence after holding out Napoli despite playing with 10 men for 88 minutes. Pablo Alvarez got himself sent off after 90 seconds in that game and was therefore suspended here. Atalanta were on a run of two straight wins against Milan and Palermo, but the injury list still included Guido Marilungo, Federico Peluso, Giampaolo Bellini, Davide Biondini, Carlos Carmona and Ivan Radovanovic. Australian James Troisi was therefore given his first Serie A start.
This was Stefano Colantuono’s 400th match as a professional Coach. Gonzalo Bergessio’s early header skimmed the bar and he just failed to get on the end of a Pablo Barrientos cross, but Guglielmo Stendardo picked up an injury and had to be replaced after 18 minutes.
Andrea Consigli came tearing off his line to parry after Francesco Lodi’s free kick was redirected into the path of Papu Gomez, then Mariano Andujar smothered at Troisi’s feet.
Cristian Raimondi scored his first Serie A goal on Sunday and went close to another by mistake, as his wayward cross turned into a shot that the ‘keeper had to flap on to the bar.
Stefano Lucchini and Barrientos got into a row over a Catania penalty shout and Troisi fired straight at the goalkeeper.
Consigli got down well to turn a Gomez daisy-cutter round the post, but there was controversy before half-time when Bergessio appeared to strike Lucchini with his elbow when they were waiting for a cross.
Atalanta took the lead with Maxi Moralez, but it was an absolutely howler from Andujar! The goalkeeper was exchanging passes with Nicolas Spolli and hit a very weak ball straight into the path of Moralez, who couldn’t help but score.
Spolli rescued his goalkeeper by equalising soon after, as he was allowed a free header from a Lodi corner to beat Consigli, nutmegging him with the nod into the ground.
Catania turned the game around completely, as Barrientos exchanged passes to burst into the box down the left channel and lifted the finish above an on-rushing goalkeeper from a tight angle.
Ferri had the chance to equalise for Atalanta in stoppages, but he only hit the side-netting after Marchese’s failed attempt at a clearance.
