Fiorentina found life difficult at the Bentegodi for a 1-1 draw, the first time these sides have shared the spoils here in a decade.
The Viola were in fine form, although their away record still left something to be desired, while Chievo were hoping to continue the boost that came from Coach Eugenio Corini winning his debut match. Alberto Aquilani, Michele Camporese and Cristian Llama were sidelined for the visitors. The Flying Donkeys had to do without Alberto Paloschi, Gennaro Sardo and Lorenzo Squizzi. Sergio Pellissier was back in the squad after surgery to remove kidney stones, but only fit for the bench.
Fiorentina had a very strong record at the Bentegodi thanks to five wins, a draw and only two losses here in the top flight.
Luciano really should’ve given Chievo the lead after six minutes, but horribly wasted by shinning the volley from seven yards as Cyril Thereau’s cross found him at the back post.
Stefano Sorrentino beat away a dangerous Manuel Pasqual angled drive after good build-up play from Juan Cuadrado.
It was Chievo who broke the deadlock with a fine individual goal from Thereau. Luciano threaded through with the outside of his boot for the Frenchman to sprint into the box and place an angled drive past the on-rushing Emiliano Viviano.
The celebrations had barely finished when Fiorentina equalised. A corner was whipped in by Pasqual and touched on for Gonzalo Rodriguez to prod it with his knee. The ball hit the inside of the upright and then Sorrentino’s stomach, but had completely crossed the line.
Luciano wasted another promising opportunity, as the Brazilian really did not have his scoring boots on.
In first half stoppages Luca Toni came very close to putting Fiorentina in front, but his diving header from a Cuadrado cross only thumped the upright.
Cuadrado combined beautifully with Stevan Jovetic only for the angled drive to skim the base of the far post. There was a nice gesture from Sorrentino, who admitted to getting the last touch so Fiorentina could have their corner.
Fiorentina had penalty appeals waved away when Bostjan Jokic appeared to bring down Facundo Roncaglia in the box.
Viviano also came tearing out to close down Stojan when clear on goal.
