Genoa keep sliding down after a fourth consecutive defeat, but Siena salvage Serse Cosmi with a narrow victory.
The sense of desperation was palpable at the Stadio Artemio Franchi-Montepaschi di Siena. The Tuscans confirmed this week that Cosmi’s job was on the line after a 4-2 hammering at Cagliari midweek, meaning they had one point from the last five rounds. Gigi Del Neri had lost both matches since taking over from Gigi De Canio with uninspired football irritating the fans.
Siena had Neto and Felipe suspended, joining Gaetano D’Agostino, Alessandro Rosina, Ribair Rodriguez and Martinez in the stands. Genoa had to do without long-term absentees Marco Borriello, Juan Manuel Vargas, Damiano Ferronetti and Marco Rossi.
More bad news for Genoa, as Cristobal Jorquera suffered a thigh strain in the opening minutes and had to make way for Andrea Bertolacci.
Siena should’ve taken the lead on 12 minutes when Emanuele Calaio sprung the offside trap, but he hesitated for far too long, perhaps thinking he was off, and by the time he got the shot away Sebastien Frey was able to parry.
Matteo Contini needed a crucial interception to stop Ciro Immobile pulling the trigger, while Bosko Jankovic’s free kick skimmed the upright.
Siena thought they had taken the lead on the half-hour mark, but Massimo Paci was flagged offside when nodding in a set play.
Ze Eduardo should’ve done better when only scuffing a shot from six yards on to Andreas Granqvist, while Gianluca Pegolo got down well to fingertip a Bertolacci daisy-cutter round the post from distance.
Ze Eduardo also limped off with an injury before half-time, making way for Erjon Bogdani.
Siena took the lead after the restart with Massimo Paci’s header from a Francesco Valiani corner kick, confirming Robur’s strength from set plays, as they have now scored six from dead ball situations.
Del Neri surprised many by substituting his substitute Bertolacci for teenage striker Ahmed Said.
Goalkeeper Pegolo had to be alert and at full stretch to fingertip an Antonelli cross away from Said in the six-yard box, but it was one of few real Genoa forays into the danger area.
