Pescara earned a potentially decisive victory in a crunch relegation dogfight that sends Genoa plummetting.
The pressure was immense on this match, as it was a bottom-of-the-table battle. The Delfini were propping up the standings on 11 points and Genoa were just one above after their shock 4-2 home defeat to Chievo.
Giuseppe Colucci, Manuele Blasi and the suspended Antonio Bocchetti missed out for Pescara, who were demolished 5-1 by Napoli last week. Gigi Del Neri had to do without Andrea Bertolacci, Cesare Bovo, Cristobal Jorquera, Alexandros Tzorvas, Anselmo and Luca Antonelli, but Marco Borriello returned from his ban.
These were the two worst defences in Serie A, so goals were to be expected at the Stadio Adriatico. There was almost a red card after seven minutes, as Brazilian Togni risked a second booking for his foul on Bosko Jankovic.
Mattia Perin was at full stretch to deny a Daniel Tozser free kick, but Elvis Abbruscato wasted a great chance by misplacing his pass for Ante Vukusic.
Genoa hit the crossbar with a wayward Juan Manuel Vargas cross-shot that seemed to swerve in the wind, then the follow-up was ballooned over by Juraj Kucka.
Genoa somehow failed to score on 24 minutes, as Uros Cosic slipped and sent Borriello clear on goal, but Perin bravely managed to get something on it to turn the ball over the bar.
Vladimir Weiss was the first to test Sebastien Frey from distance on the half-hour mark, followed by Birkir Bjarnason.
However, Genoa hit the woodwork for the second time in the half, as Juraj Kucka chested down and volleyed an extraordinary effort from 20 metres that dipped to smack the crossbar.
Pescara took the lead after the restart when Bjarnason sent Weiss down the left and he pulled back from the by-line for Elvis Abbruscato to tap in from three yards.
Weiss skimmed the base of the upright and Perin got down to deny a Bosko Jankovic attempt.
Pescara doubled their lead when Weiss rolled across for Vukusic and the not particularly powerful shot squirmed through Frey’s hands for the Croatian’s first Serie A goal.
