Roma’s remarkable winning streak crashed to a halt in thick Verona fog, as Sergio Pellissier got Chievo’s first ever victory in this fixture.
Zdenek Zeman’s men were on a roll after five consecutive victories in all competition and reached the Coppa Italia Quarter-Finals this week. Erik Lamela was back in the squad after almost a month out injured, while Daniele De Rossi and Miralem Pjanic shook off knocks. Chievo were without Luciano, Kamil Vacek and Nicolas Frey, but were coming off two wins on the bounce.
Roma had never lost at the Bentegodi, managing six draws and four victories in Serie A.
Stefano Sorrentino had his palms stung at the near post to turn Osvaldo’s right-foot strike out for a corner and Francesco Totti’s volley flashed off target.
Leandro Castan was booked and will be suspended for Roma’s next game against Milan. Totti attempted a long-range effort that dipped on to the roof of the net. Alessandro Florenzi’s impressive volley was not far wide.
Fog descended on the Stadio Bentegodi and the floodlights were turned on for the second half. Mauro Goicoechea needed a stunning save from point-blank range to keep out a Luca Rigoni header from Cyril Thereau’s corner.
Osvaldo nodded a Miralem Pjanic cross just wide, then the striker was a little late to meet Michael Bradley’s smart assist.
Erik Lamela came off the bench and almost immediately Sorrentino had to smother at his feet, while the Argentine and Sergio Pellissier had shots charged down. It was increasingly foggy as the afternoon wore on.
Pellissier could see amid the fog, as he sprung the offside trap on a long ball over the top and flicked it to go past Goicoechea, tapping into the empty net.
