Isaac Cofie’s debut Serie A goal gave Chievo a slender victory against toothless Atalanta.
This was a relegation tussle at the Bentegodi and one point separated them going into the weekend. The Flying Donkeys were without Nicolas Frey and Boukary Drame, while Atalanta missed Stefano Lucchini, Thomas Manfredini, Daniele Capelli, Guido Marilungo and the suspended Carlos Carmona.
Atalanta had the real real scoring opportunity after 23 minutes when Stefano Sorrentino showed quick reflexes to parry Cristiano Raimondi’s effort at the base of the near post from point-blank range.
Chievo broke the deadlock with Isaac Cofie’s debut Serie A goal. The Cyril Thereau cross was chipped up to the back post where Cofie was totally unmarked for a well-taken volley.
Thereau almost got on the scoreline himself in first half stoppages, going on a mazy run for his angled daisy-cutter pushed away by one strong Andrea Consigli hand.
However, before the break Atalanta wasted a double opportunity to equalise. First Giacomo Bonaventura tested Stefano Sorrentino at the near post, then the ball was rolling towards an open goal and Giuseppe De Luca, but Dario Dainelli somehow managed to scramble it clear.
Play was halted straight after the restart when Sorrentino needed treatment for a thigh problem. Despite that injury, he bravely flew off his line to charge down Bonaventura from point-blank range.
Chievo stepped up the pressure as Thereau and Roberto Guana had efforts, but eventually settled into their lead to take home the victory.
