SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 20 - 13 Jan 2013 (14.00 UK)
Lazio 2 - 0 Atalanta
Floccari 67 (L), Brivio og 77 (L)
Stadio Olimpico

Lazio squeezed past Atalanta in controversial circumstances to close the gap on leaders Juventus to just three points.

The Biancocelesti were unbeaten in 12 and sitting pretty in second place. Despite missing Ederson and Andre Dias for this game, they were the favourites to secure another victory and had already won 1-0 in Bergamo in the opening round. Atalanta were without Stefano Lucchini, Gianpaolo Bellini, Daniele Capelli and Guido Marilungo, while notching up one win in seven matches, losing four away ties on the trot. Luigi Giorgi and Michele Canini made their debuts.

Federico Marchetti denied a Maxi Moralez header from point-blank range, though he was offside anyway.

Moralez went close again, but failed to make contact with a Giacomo Bonaventura ball across the face of goal. Atalanta were surprisingly aggressive in the opening half-hour and threatened when Davide Brivio misplaced his volley from close range.

Lazio were disappointing, so after half-an-hour Vladimir Petkovic switched to a three-man defence. However, Brivio again threatened with an angled drive just wide, as Hernanes had a few wayward attempts from distance.

The start of the second half was delayed by a few minutes, as Lazio goalkeeper Marchetti had forgotten to put on his shorts… There was also a double substitution, as Sergio Floccari and Lorik Cana came on.

Andrea Consigli smothered a Hernanes free kick, while Denis needed a goalline clearance to stop Lorik Cana’s header going in, but Lazio took the lead in hugely controversial circumstances.

Brivio turned a Stefan Radu cross on to the underside of his own crossbar, it ricocheted on to Floccari’s arm and then the striker bundled it over the line from a yard. Atalanta were understandably furious, but the goal was awarded.

There were no complaints on the second Lazio goal, as Brivio accidentally nodded past his own goalkeeper with a diving header from Stefano Mauri’s cross.

Atalanta ended the match with 10 men, as Carlos Carmona received a second yellow card.

In the final minute Hernanes almost added his name to the scoresheet, but the free kick smacked against the crossbar from 20 yards.
