Sampdoria honoured President Riccardo Garrone with a 6-0 victory and Mauro Icardi got four goals.

President Garrone died this week just a few days shy of his 77th birthday and his family asked for his memory to be honoured with Blucerchiati flags waving at Marassi. There were moving scenes before kick-off with a minute’s silence and players in tears.

Enzo Maresca was still sidelined, but Maxi Lopez returned for a spot on the bench. Pescara had Vladimir Weiss and Francesco Modesto suspended, so Milton Caraglio made his debut.

Eder fired over when one-on-one with Mattia Perin, then the goalkeeper needed a great save to deny Lorenzo De Silvestri’s left-foot strike at the base of the near post.

The referee pointed to the spot for Cristian Terlizzi’s shirt-tug on Daniele Gastaldello and Eder converted by sending Perin the wrong way.

Mauro Icardi went on the counter and dribbled round the goalkeeper, but narrowed the angle too much and couldn’t keep his finish on target.

Perin flew for a fantastic save, pushing a downward Andrea Costa header from a corner off the line. Eder’s pass released Icardi, who fired wide, but the 19-year-old striker got his goal moments later. His movement confused the defence so he broke away from a through ball and smashed the angled drive into the far bottom corner.

Pescara were furious in first half stoppages, as Terlizzi felt he was dragged down by Gastaldello, but the referee waved away angry protests.

Sampdoria made it 3-0 with Pedro Obiang’s debut Serie A goal. The ball was not dealt with outside the box and the young midfielder curled a fierce finish under the bar.

The Delfini defence was AWOL as Icardi sprung the offside trap from midfield and was totally alone, waltzing round Perin to deposit into an empty net.

Icardi scored his first Serie A hat-trick and was again totally unmarked to tap in from seven yards as Eder flashed a pass across from the right.

There was truly only one team at Marassi and Perin came flying off his line to close down Andrea Poli.

Icardi completed his poker with a fourth goal of the day, pouncing on another defensive error for a precise angled drive.
