Juraj Kucka did enough to give Genoa a much-needed win, but Udinese paid the price for awful finishing.
The Grifone were reborn and still unbeaten under Davide Ballardini, their third Coach of the campaign, but had to do without Bosko Jankovic, Antonio Floro Flores and Mattia Cassani. Udinese were having their traditional second half of the season surge and had already conquered Marassi against Sampdoria this term. Danilo was suspended with Giampiero Pinzi and Zeljko Brkic sidelined.
Juraj Kucka nodded a free kick on to the side-netting, but Udinese lost Andrea Lazzari to a knee injury early on.
Andrea Bertolacci blasted a fierce strike just over the bar from distance, but a Kucka screamer whistled just wide with a slight deflection.
From that corner, Daniele Padelli horribly flapped at the cross, completely missing the ball and allowing Kucka to nod into an empty net from six yards.
Giovanni Pasquale’s left-foot volley skimmed the upright and Maicosuel’s curler was just over the bar. Padelli just about got a Cesare Bovo free kick under control and Luca Antonelli’s scorching volley was just off target, but there was panic in the Udinese box when Padelli fumbled a Borriello cross and managed to block it from going over the line after accidentally colliding with his own player.
Emmanuel Badu threatened an equaliser with his angled drive skimming the upright to Frey’s right. Badu went close again with a long-range shot that took a slight deflection to force Frey’s save.
Mehdi Benatia should’ve equalised in stoppages, but incredibly missed from six yards. Udinese managed to waste yet another opportunity in stoppages, as Alexander Merkel fired off target against his former teammates.
