Cagliari have practically secured their safety in Serie A after getting the best chances in a 0-0 draw away to Siena.
Robur have always been favourites for relegation and started the season from -6 due to the betting scandal, but lifted themselves to within two points of the safety zone going into this weekend. Nicola Pozzi and Simone Vergassola missed out again, but they were unbeaten on home turf against Cagliari with six wins and four draws between Serie A and B. The Sardinians were without Daniele Conti, Marco Sau and the suspended Luca Rossettini.
In the opening stages Thiago Ribeiro’s header was wide and Albin Ekdal nodded an Andrea Cossu cross on to the roof of the net. Alessio Sestu drilled wide from just inside the area for Siena, then the same player flicked on an Angelo pass, testing goalkeeper Michael Agazzi at the base of the near post.
Victor Ibarbo scored a hat-trick last week and threatened to get on the sheet again, as he used his extraordinary pace to burst through a group of Siena players and Gianluca Pegolo came flying off his line to close down the shot. It fell to Radja Nainggolan, whose screamer was wide on the follow-up.
In first half stoppages, Innocent Emeghara was at full stretch, but just failed to get a crucial toe to a dangerous cross into the six-yard box.
Emeghara only scuffed a shot into Agazzi’s arms from point-blank range after Davide Astori failed to cut out the cross.
Ibarbo went down in the box after a tussle with Angelo, but the referee waved play on, insisting it was a fair challenge.
Cagliari went very close to snatching a victory in the final minute, as a Mauricio Pinilla cross flashed across the face of goal and Nene just failed to get a toe to it, as it skimmed the far post. There was a similar move deep into stoppages, as Pegolo crucially intercepted Pinilla's cross with Nene unmarked from four yards.
