A goalless draw was played out at the Bentegodi, as Chievo and Catania are now coasting out the rest of the season.
The Elefantini’s Euro hopes were dissipating fast, though Pablo Barrientos, Francesco Lodi and Sergio Almiron were back in the squad. Chievo had Dario Dainelli, Marco Andreolli, Isaac Cofie and Boukary Drame back from suspension, but Simone Bentivoglio and Bojan Jokic sat out bans.
This was a special game for Coach Rolando Maran, who spent 10 years at Chievo as a player and then assistant manager.
Sergio Pellissier volleyed a cross for Cyril Thereau to also then volley over in what would’ve been a spectacular goal.
Cristian Puggioni had to sprint off his line to stop a Lodi counter-attack after Drame’s error, while Barrientos tripped on the ball during a strong run into the box. Pellissier failed to make the most of a Giuseppe Bellusci error, as Nicolas Spolli got back to plug the hole, then a trademark Lodi free kick whistled just over the bar.
Thereau’s header was well held and Puggioni did well to beat away a downward Gonzalo Bergessio header at the base of the near post from point-blank range.
Drame failed to get enough power behind his angled drive to trouble Mariano Andujar and Bergessio accidentally charged down his own teammate Barrientos’ shot. Puggioni had to rush off his line to stop Alejandro Gomez finishing off a long Marco Biagianti pass.
Bellusci risked scoring an own goal when he deflected Marco Andreolli’s header, but Mariano Andujar came to his rescue.
