Sassuolo are still waiting for their first ever Serie A goal, as they were beaten 2-0 by Torino.
This was an historic occasion, as Sassuolo had never before played in the top flight, but were surprise winners of the Serie B title last season. There was a fiery end to that campaign, which meant Lino Marzorati, Alessandro Longhi, Luca Antei and Domenico Berardi were all suspended. Torino also missed Alessandro Gazzi and Paulo Vitor Barreto on bans, but had Ciro Immobile to partner Alessio Cerci in his new attacking role.
Immobile burst into the box and forced Rosati to smother at the base of the near post, while Daniele Padelli kept out shots from Masucci and Simone Zaza.
Torino broke the deadlock before half-time with an unexpected goalscorer. Matteo Brighi’s run was not tracked, so he was given time and space to pick his spot with a daisy-cutter on Immobile’s assist from just inside the area. It was a scuffed finish, but a precise one that rolled into the far bottom corner.
Alessio Cerci doubled Toro’s lead with one of his trademark left-foot curlers towards the far post, having shaken off Reto Ziegler.
