SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 3 - 15 Sep 2013 (14.00 UK)
Verona 2 - 0 Sassuolo
Martinho 12 (V), Romulo 93 (V)
Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi

Verona continued their fine campaign with a 2-0 victory, but Sassuolo wasted an incredible number of chances.

The two newly-promoted clubs faced off at the Bentegodi in an early six-pointer. Luca Toni missed out along with Daniele Ragatzu and Michelangelo Albertazzi, so Daniele Cacia started in attack for the hosts. Sassuolo were looking for their first ever Serie A point, though Luca Marrone and Domenico Berardi were unavailable.

Francesco Acerbi made his comeback after undergoing emergency surgery in July when a testicular tumour was discovered during a routine medical.

Hellas had a strong start and Cacia only skimmed a splendid Martinho assist when one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Martinho went for goal himself soon after and it worked, as he scored his debut Serie A goal. Emil Hallfredsson’s through ball sent him clear down the left and Martinho picked his spot to fire under the bar from a tight angle with a fierce left-foot strike.

Verona lost captain Maietta to injury after just 23 minutes, making way for Bianchetti. A Jasmin Kurtic free kick whistled inches past the upright.

Simone Zaza went close for Sassuolo with an effort that was curled over the bar, though he was furious as the deflection was off the hand of Vangelis Moras.

Zaza threatened again after the restart with a header over from a corner, but Pomini performed a splendid reaction save to keep out a Juan Gomez Taleb curler.

Sassuolo went extremely close on the hour mark, as first Rafael used his wrist to beat away a swerving Ezequiel Schelotto strike from distance, then Gazzola incredibly hit a fresh-air shot from point-blank range when it seemed impossible to miss.

Sassuolo continued to pour forward and Romanian Marius Alexe’s header into the ground bounced over the bar. The chances piled up with no goal to show for them, as Cacia fired over, Kurtic drilled wide and Zaza’s scuffed attempt bobbled across the face of goal with no final touch.

Antonio Floro Flores got his head to a corner, but Rafael flew for a diving reaction save and Francesco Acerbi couldn’t get the rebound in.

Despite all their opportunities, Sassuolo couldn’t find a way through and Verona doubled their lead. Jorginho dribbled past three players and generously rolled across for Romulo to fire home unmarked from nine yards.
