Mati Fernandez and Giuseppe Rossi allowed Fiorentina to power past Atalanta in Bergamo.
The Viola’s 100 per cent record was ruined by a last-gasp Cagliari equaliser last week, a game where they also lost Mario Gomez and Juan Guillermo Cuadrado to long-term injuries. David Pizarro was sent off for dissent and started his two-match ban, but 20-year-old Polish attacking midfielder Rafal Wolski was a surprise starter. Atalanta had Luca Cigarini suspended, joining the injured Luigi Giorgi and Riccardo Cazzola in the stands.
Stefan Savic had to charge down a Mario Yepes shot inside the area with Neto probably beaten, while Wolski’s angled drive was well parried and Mati Fernandez couldn’t tap in the rebound at full stretch.
Giulio Migliaccio tested Neto from distance and Mati Fernandez’s volley skimmed the crossbar.
Mati Fernandez did break the deadlock with a smart follow-up after Wolski’s header from a Borja Valero cross came off the bar.
Migliaccio was unlucky at the dawn of the second half, his looping header smacking against the crossbar.
Joaquin came on for Fiorentina and forced Andrea Consigli into a save straight away with a splendid volley towards the near post.
Giuseppe Rossi hit the side-netting from a corner and it was a warning, as he scored moments later. A corner was knocked down and he controlled with a half-volley perhaps taking a deflection on its way into the net.
Neto performed a great reaction save to deny Denis from point-blank range on a corner.
