Chievo 2 - 1 Udinese
Maicosuel 1 (U), Pellissier 13 (C), Rigoni 41 (C)
Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi

Udinese scored the fastest goal of the season, but Chievo fought back to earn their first victory of the campaign.

The Flying Donkeys were looking for their first win of the campaign, but made several changes to their line-ups, bringing in Sergio Pellissier and Alessandro Bernardini. Udinese rested Antonio Di Natale ahead of Tuesday’s match with Genoa, while Gianpiero Pinzi, Maurizio Domizzi and Zeljko Brkic sidelined.

It took less than a minute for Udinese to break the deadlock. Luis Muriel pressured Bostjan Cesar into making a poor backpass and Bernardini didn’t take control of the situation, so Maicosuel pounced to dribble into an empty net. That was the sixth goal Chievo have conceded in the first half this season.

Chievo fought back and Ivan Kelava had his palms stung by a fierce Ivan Radovanovic effort from 20 metres, while Bernardini nodded a corner wide.

The pressure paid off, as veteran Pellissier sprung the offside trap and placed a perfect snooker shot of an angled drive across Kelava into the far bottom corner.

Moments later Kelava needed an extraordinary double save as shots rained in from Alberto Paloschi and then Alessio Sestu. From that corner, Luca Rigoni’s glancing header skimmed the back stick.

Pellissier went extremely close with a bizarre effort, as he pounced on a goalkeeping error to deflect the ball with his shoulder and it looped across an open goal to clip the far post.

Chievo turned the game around completely with a stroke of luck, as Rigoni’s strike from the edge of the box took a deflection off Danilo to loop over a helpless Kelava.

Francesco Guidolin threw on Di Natale in a bid to get this match back on track and it almost worked when he tested Christian Puggioni after five minutes.

Dusan Basta had a great chance on 72 minutes with his half-volley that dipped on to the crossbar past Puggioni’s fingertips.

Moments later it was Thomas Heurtaux who’s header redirected a Roberto Pereyra cross inches over the bar. Puggioni did well in stoppages to smother at Di Natale’s feet when he chested down and went for the half-volley.
