Jaroslav Plasil’s debut Serie A goal and Lucas Castro gave Catania their first win of the campaign.
The Elefantini were in crisis with only one point from an available 15, so this was an early relegation six-pointer. Nicolas Spolli, Pablo Alvarez and the suspended Giuseppe Bellusci were unavailable, while Chievo were without Dario Dainelli.
The Flying Donkeys had never kept a clean sheet in Sicily, conceding eight goals in their previous six visits. However, Catania were without a home goal yet this season.
Catania had two great chances in quick succession, but Christian Puggioni did well to beat away both Gonzalo Bergessio’s effort and the Pablo Barrientos follow-up from close range.
The Elefantini finally broke through with Jaroslav Plasil’s debut Serie A goal. It was a daisy-cutter from outside the box that went in off the post.
Plasil should’ve added a second five minutes later, but his free header whistled inches past the upright.
Chievo fought back and Mariano Andujar pushed a long-range Ivan Radovanovic strike away, from that corner Alessio Sestu’s header was on the roof of the net.
Catania doubled their lead, as Gonzalo Bergessio might’ve got only the slightest of touches to flick on a smart Lucas Castro cross-shot past Puggioni, though replays suggest it went in by itself.
Pablo Barrientos should’ve made it 3-0 on 70 minutes, but somehow blasted straight at the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation.
