Great goals from Luca Cigarini and German Denis doomed Lazio in a 2-1 defeat away to Atalanta.
The Biancocelesti were hoping to end their dismal Serie A away run of one point in three attempts this season and welcomed back Miroslav Klose to the bench after a month out for knee surgery. However, Stefan Radu, Giuseppe Biava, Abdoulay Konko and Bruno Pereirinha were still sidelined with Cristian Ledesma suffering from flu. Atalanta were revived after a poor start to the campaign, though Luigi Giorgi, Riccardo Cazzola and Giulio Migliaccio missed out.
The Stadio Azzurri d’Italia was fired up, as the club celebrated its 106th anniversary this week. Cristian Raimondi nodded straight at Federico Marchetti from a set play, while Lucas Biglia’s low drive was comfortably smothered.
Lazio had much of the possession early on, but were toothless in attack and continually misplaced passes. Sergio Floccari’s curling effort took a deflection to skim the back post.
The first genuine scoring opportunity was on 36 minutes. A cross was smartly volleyed in by Cristiano Del Grosso for Giacomo Bonaventura, who came sliding in and forced Marchetti to beat it away.
Biglia blasted over, but Atalanta’s tails were up and they should’ve scored moments later. Maxi Moralez sprung the offside trap and chipped Marchetti, but was denied by an acrobatic Pedro Cavanda goalline clearance.
From the resulting corner, Giampaolo Bellini drilled inches over the bar and the goal finally arrived from Luca Cigarini. He watched the ball bounce and hit it on the half-volley low at the near post, finding the tiniest of gaps between Marchetti’s glove and the upright.
Antonio Candreva came on for the second half and Lazio drew level with Brayan Perea’s debut Serie A goal. The 20-year-old Colombian showed strength to hold off his marker and prod a Senad Lulic cross in from six yards.
Andrea Consigli then got down to beat away a Hernanes free kick that was curling into the far bottom corner, while Atalanta lost Lucchini to injury. Raimondi’s misplaced strike almost turned into an assist for Denis, who just failed to make contact.
Hernanes hit a screamer just past the upright and Bonaventura managed to injure his thigh while performing a backheel flick.
Atalanta restored their advantage in the final minutes, as Denis sprung the offside trap on a Cigarini through ball, dribbled round Marchetti and deposited into an empty net.
