Gigi De Canio’s debut on the Catania bench ended in a stalemate with Sassuolo.
It was all change at the Massimino, as Rolando Maran was fired last week and this was De Canio’s first match in charge. He had to do without Nicolas Spolli, Giuseppe Bellusci and the banned duo of Nicola Legrottaglie and Pablo Alvarez. Sassuolo got their first ever Serie A victory last week, so were brimming with confidence.
Gianluca Pegolo needed a fine reaction save to deny Plasil’s header from point-blank range, while Domenico Berardi’s free kick skimmed the upright.
Pegolo rushed out to smother at Gonzalo Bergessio’s feet, but Lino Marzorati had to limp off after getting his left ankle caught during a clearance.
Pegolo parried a low free kick from Panagiotis Tachtsidis, but Bergessio was unable to get the follow-up on target.
Simone Zaza sprung the offside trap from a Simone Missiroli pass in the final minutes and dribbled round Mariano Andujar, but narrowed the angle too much and hit the side-netting for Sassuolo.
